This chapter advances the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health for Children and Youth—ICF-CY (WHO, 2007) as a new framework for guiding psychological assessment, from conceptualization of needs classification for children and youth (ICF-CY) was published in 2007. The ICF integrates the major models of disability. It recognises the role of environmental factors in the creation of disability, as well as the relevance of associated health conditions and their effects. This overview provides a brief introduction to the ICF— its structure, contents, purposes and applications. Aims ICF-CY codes for children with communication disability is discussed.
The ICF-CY includes all ICF categories, plus additional ones specific to children and youth, making up 1685 catego-ries in total (531 body functions, 329 body structures, 552 Multiple databases were systematically searched for AIS outcome studies focussing on functioning or disability. To exemplify the status quo, the primary focus of 56 assessment tools and 22 intervention approaches for children with speech impairment is categorised using the ICF-CY. In line with the World Health Organization's recommendations for developing correspondences between assessment measures and the ICF-CY classification system, this study presents results of the linkage between ICF-CY and CCPSN, using deductive content analysis and the previously published linking rules (Cieza et al., 2005). Utility of the ICF-CY in Assessment As ICF-CY is presented as an interactive model, the different parts influence each other. From our perspective, one suggestion is that child engagement is an outcome, affected by factors included in all the other components of the interactive model.
As the functioning and disability of an individual occurs in a context, ICF also includes a list of environmental factors. The purpose of this article is to describe how the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Child and Youth (ICF-CY) can be used in combination with Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), an individualised measure of change, to connect the various phases of the therapeutic process to provide consistent clinical care that is family-centred, collaborative, well directed and accountable.
